Webster Free Public Library

Trustees Meeting

August 22, 2018

The meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m.  Present were Cathryn Clark-Dawe, Director, Nancy Picthall-French, Chairperson, Marty Bender, Treasurer and Leslie Collins, Secretary.  Kim Fortune also attended the meeting.

The Secretary’s report for July was reviewed and accepted after speedtest.com was changed to speedtest.net under New Business.  Also under New Business, on the fourth line, four board members was changed to three board members and Cathryn’s name was added.

The Treasurer’s report will be reviewed in September.  Marty and Nancy must both sign checks written from Merrimack County Bank.

Kim Fortune requested that the library show the movie The Hungry Heart.   Nancy will contact Bess O’Brien (kingdomcounty.org), Director of the film, to inquire if the $65 purchase fee includes permission to show the film.  She will also get dates and the cost of a possible panel discussion.  Kim stated that Leslie Palmer offered to pay for purchasing the film from the Welfare budget.  Kim felt that the Select Board, Church, First Responders and Police would support the film.  Kim volunteered to assemble a discussion panel from local residents if the need arises. Kim provided her email and phone number to Nancy and Leslie.

Old Business

Cathryn will be on vacation from August 26-29. The library will be closed.

Cathryn provided feedback on how to manage oral histories online from other libraries through her Listserv.

Marty recorded his first oral history of Theda Stone.  He did not use a lapel microphone and felt the clarity was quite good.  The SD card holds 24 hours of recording and Marty used 2.5 hours.

Reviewing the Bylaws was postponed to the September meeting due to time restraints.

Computers will be monitored for speed, as additional computers are added, for any potential computer classes in the library in the future.

Marty has oiled the bench with teak oil.

On August 1, Leslie delivered four more Celebration Bags to the Food Pantry, for a total of 8 bags.  Peg Foss said they could use up to 15 Thanksgiving Bags and 15 Christmas Bags.  In order to accomplish this goal, donations need to be requested consistently on all Webster Facebook pages (town, library, political) and in the Grapevine.

New Business

Movies were chosen for September (Double Indemnity) and November (Body Heat).  Marty will contact Sony to ask for permission to show Joyeux Noel for December.

Cathryn reviewed the process for Hopkinton residents to obtain a temporary library card while the Hopkinton Library is being rebuilt.  She received a thank you note from the Hopkinton Trustees for her kind gesture.

Cathryn requested that Marty check the latest invoice from Baker & Taylor to verify we are receiving the discount offered to libraries.

Marty will look into purchasing one lapel microphone ($15) for future oral history interviews.

Marty will visit Sandy Starkey and see if she might benefit from the Homebound Delivery Program.

Leslie requested a change of date for landscaping the front gardens of the library.  The new date is Tuesday, September 25, at 10 a.m.

Leslie is collecting materials for a backpack that can be checked out for hiking.

Nancy would like to send the Hopkinton Library a gift card for lunch during its rebuilding, perhaps in October.

The meeting ended at 5:50 p.m.  The next meeting of the Webster Free Public Library will be on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 4:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Leslie Collins, Secretary
